The Crossing
what will it take me
to leap across to foreign land
longing, loving the affair
with the unknown voices
whispering in sweet seduction
from across the winding waters
a bridge of wild roses
grows as I open myself to listen
petals red as blood
unfolding an outspoken invitation
to cross this faithful arc
bare-footed, bare-handed
what do I have to leave behind?
am I willing, ready to confess?
mind a busy mess
full of mayflies in winter
this tender structure might not carry
all the weight my shoulders do
so there I stand, letting down layers
until my naked body almost levitates across the vines
touching each spine with the intention of tender caress
trusting that, if sacrifice was needed,
the colour of my blood would
gracefully join the natural palette
as I gaze into the water
i see my shapes merge into fluid renderings
so ready to find new form, new sense
a tear stirs a ripple on the surface
announcing my arrival ahead and
thanking what's behind with deep appreciation
a final step across to reach the shore
my feet curiously landing in unknown soil
hands grasping for familiar holds
unfamiliar smells filling my senses
the song of new beginnings
readying my beating heart for new horizons
